Eric: Pleo Observations

Date: 7/13/12

Person:

Male, Caucasian, 50’s, Disney imagineer

Male, Asian, 50’s, Possibly Disney imagineer

Male, Caucasian, 50’s, Disney imagineer

Robot: Grandpa

What was the demo: Remote control

What did they say: Did you guys make these? We are imagineers, and we do stuff like this for a living.

What did they do: Issued “Moo, Call, rock, godzilla, and hiccup” commands. However the imagineers seemed most interested in the Pleos skin. They pulled at it and touched it.

Method of interaction: Iphone (Caucasian, Asian). No touch sensors were activated, although the skin was examined.

What did I do: I asked them if they could do anything what they would have it do. They responded “walk.” This was odd because there was a walk demo that they seemed to have ignored. By this point however they were leaving and seemed to have lost interest.

What you think about their emotional state (happy, angry, scared, and why we think that): I think they were moderately interested, but did not seem excited. I think this because they went through the interactions with little verbal output, i.e. they didn’t remark that anything was particularly interesting. They did not seem particularly impressed with the Pleo or it’s behavior, but were curious enough in the connection method to go through all the steps of connecting.

Person:

Female, 35, Latina, teacher

Female, 28, Asian, teacher

Robot: Grandpa

What was the demo: remote control (both), touch (Asain)

What did they say: Oh that’s really cool. How does it work? Our kids would really like this. (In reference to the “poo” behavior): If we had this in our classroom the kids would make it poo all the time.

What did they do: Sent commands “Moo, poo, walk, rock, backwards, Godzilla, etc. all commands.”

Method of interaction: via iphone and touch (Asian) and ipad (Latina)

What did I do: Asked them what they would like to see it do. They stated dance and read a story

What you think about their emotional state (happy, angry, scared, and why we think that): Excited. They thought that controlling it via a phone was very cool. This was based on the fact that they said they thought it was very cool.

Person:

Male, 30 causasian, occupation unknown

Male, 30 causasian, occupation unknown

Robot: Grandpa

What was the demo: remote control

What did they say: They were interested in what we were doing and why we were set up outside. Then they tried the demos, and noticed that one of them (Godzilla) wasn’t working. They then said “I guess it’s broken.” I restarted the robot and then the demo worked again, and then they said “oh.”

What did they do: They were interested in the robot and what it could do. They did not want to go through the trouble of using their own devices to control the robot, so instead they used my machine to control the robot through the web interface.

Method of interaction: My computer web interface, no touch

What did I do: I told them about Pleo and how we were controlling it.

What you think about their emotional state (happy, angry, scared, and why we think that): Very interested. They were willing to wait while I restarted the robot so they could hear the sounds that Pleo would make.
